Sitting at my desk hours later, I stare at my computer screen unable to work. My head is a jumbled mess. I want to go to Lucâs office and throw myself on his desk. I want him to love me. Or I want to stop loving him. Iâm so torn. Do I just try to go with it and be Georgie and Lucâs permanent third wheel? Do I pretend he loves me because he lets me touch him? I put my head on the desk. I donât know what to do and the person I would ask for help is the reason Iâm so fucked up.
âBen?â
I look up at the sound of his voice. âHey, Luc.â
âYou okay?â
I shake my head. âNot really.â
âMe neither.â He gestures to the chair. âCan I sit?â
âYeah.â
âI spoke with Georgie about it all. Told her your decision and what you needed.â
I nod. âAnd she told me to quit being a fucking pussy?â
Luc laugh softly. âNo, she said she was gutted. The three of us together make her happy, and it doesnât feel right without you.â
I chew on my lip, staring at my desk.
âBen?â
I force my eyes up to meet his. âShe said if you needed her, sheâll be there for you. Always.â
My eyes start to tear, so I lift my head, trying to blink them back.
âNow Iâm talking, mate.â
I meet his intense gaze.
âSeeing you in pain is killing me. Knowing I caused itââ
âYou didnât. I caused it. I let my feelings get away from me. Itâs my fault.â
âIs it my fault I fell in love with Georgie?â
âThatâs different.â
âHow exactly?â
âI donât know.â I shake my head. âMaybe because sheâs an option. You never were for me. I should have guarded my heart better.â
He reaches for my hand and I give it to him. âCome to dinner with us. Weâll talk it out. I said I would give you space, but I cannot sit back and let you suffer. I wonât. Neither will Georgie.â
âDinner?â
âYeah, weâll go somewhere nice and talk like mature adults.â He grins. âNo shagging allowed.â
I laugh, squeezing his hand. âOkay. Iâd like that.â
âWe can meet Georgie somewhere near here.â
âGreat. Thanks for caring so much.â
He tilts his head. âI always have.â
After Luc leaves, my spirits are slightly lifted. Having Georgie there will help. Or weâll all end up in someoneâs bed again. I realize the time and grab my phone to go to my next meeting. Itâs staff and Luc will be there. At least we cleared the air somewhat.
As Iâm walking down the hall, Kate is heading straight for me. âHey.â
She smiles. âHi. I was on my way to see you.â
âOh yeah?â
âYeah. One of the guys in our area has some free concert tickets heâs giving away. Itâs just, like, a local band, but I thought if you werenât busy, maybe we could go.â
My brow furrows. âOh, man, I wish I could. I already have plans tonight.â
Her face falls. âOh? Doing what?â
âJust dinner with some friends.â
âLuc?â
I notice her tone leaning close to jealousy. âLuc and Georgie.
